Ever since surviving a plane crash which claimed the lives of his parents, Shinji has been able to see dark grotesque spirits. He lives alone, but is often visited by his cousin Hatsune and aunt Miyako, who both had also miraculously survived the incident. Lately, there have been increasingly more strange deaths in Sakuranomori, and Shinji felt that the spirits that he saw must be related to them.
One day, his osananajimi Madoka, who had constantly supported him and whom he had vowed to protect, told him that she was moving to Tokyo. Realizing his feelings for her, he confessed to her and they become lovers. Tragically, she was found murdered the next morning.
Shinji eventually returned to his normal routine as he did not wish to worry Hatsune and Miyako, but he was merely a shell of his former self. He harbored hatred for the shadows that he thought caused her death, until it was revealed that she had been strangled. He vowed to avenge Madoka’s death by killing her murderer.
Three years later, he saw the ghost of one of his classmates and began to investigate into her death, sparking the curiosity of another classmate Kureha. The ghost revealed that she had been killed a bodach, a monster with human skin. Kureha invited him to join the ‘Sakuramori Dreamers’ to vanquish the bodachs, which they must fight in a dream world. With the dark flame deep inside his flame still ablaze, he throws himself into battle, to protect the town and the one he loves.
